Pre-colonial Era (30,000 BC - 1565)
Austronesian peoples settled Philippines from Taiwan. Barangay (village) system. Trade with China, Arabs, India. Islam arrived 14th century in southern islands.
Spanish Colonization (1565-1898)
Ferdinand Magellan reached Philippines 1521 — killed by Lapu-Lapu in Battle of Mactan. Miguel Lopez de Legazpi colonized 1565. Catholic conversion of majority. Galleon Trade Manila-Acapulco 250 years.
Philippine Revolution and American Occupation (1896-1946)
Andres Bonifacio founded Katipunan 1892. Jose Rizal executed 1896 — national hero. Revolution 1896-1898. Spanish-American War 1898 — USA bought Philippines for 20 million dollars. Philippine-American War 1899-1902 brutally suppressed. American rule 48 years.
Japanese Occupation (1941-1945)
Japan invaded December 8, 1941. Bataan Death March 1942 — 18,000 died. Japanese atrocities. American return 1944 (I shall return — MacArthur). Liberation 1945, Manila destroyed.
Independence (1946)
July 4, 1946 — Philippines independent. Manuel Roxas first president. Hukbalahap communist insurgency 1946-1954.
Marcos Dictatorship (1965-1986)
Ferdinand Marcos elected 1965. Martial law 1972-1981. Corruption, human rights abuses, killings. People Power Revolution 1986 — Marcos fled, Corazon Aquino became president.
Modern Philippines (1986-today)
Democracy restored. Multiple presidents. Rodrigo Duterte 2016-2022 — brutal drug war. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. (son of dictator) elected 2022. 117 million population. Catholic country (80%), only Christian-majority in Asia besides East Timor.
