Canyoneering to Kawasan Falls
The most adrenaline-packed day trip in the Visayas starts in the hills between Alegria and Badian on Cebu's southwest coast. Moalboal, about 30 minutes north of Badian, hides one of the strangest natural spectacles in Southeast Asia. A permanent bait ball of millions of sardines lives just meters from Panagsama Beach - not on a distant reef, but literally where the sand drops into the blue. You wade in from shore, put your face in the water and disappear into a swirling silver wall. Snorkeling with the sardines from the beach costs nothing.
Green sea turtles graze along the same drop-off, and a short bangka ride takes you to Pescador Island, a limestone pinnacle ringed by coral walls that divers rate among the best in the country. Freediving schools in town run one-day intro courses if you want to get closer to the action.
Whale Sharks in Oslob: Read This Before You Go
Oslob, on Cebu's southeast tip, became world famous for guaranteed whale shark encounters. The honest part of the story: the sharks show up because feeders hand out krill every morning. Scientists have documented changed migration and feeding behavior, boat-strike scars and crowding, which is why many marine biologists and responsible travel organizations ask visitors to skip it.
If you want a wild encounter instead, plan a trip to Donsol in Sorsogon (Luzon), where boats search for naturally passing whale sharks between roughly November and May - no feeding, no guarantees, and a much better feeling afterwards. If you do choose Oslob, follow the rules strictly: no touching, no flash, keep your distance.
Cebu City: 500 Years of History in One Afternoon
The oldest city in the Philippines packs its heritage into a walkable core. Magellan's Cross marks the spot linked to the arrival of Christianity in 1521, and next door the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino houses the Santo Nino image - considered the oldest Christian relic in the country. Fort San Pedro, a small triangular Spanish fort by the harbor, is a quiet spot to end the loop.
In the hills above the city, the Temple of Leah - a Roman-style monument a husband built for his late wife - and the flower terraces of Sirao Garden make an easy half-day combo with sweeping views over Cebu. Go on a weekday morning to avoid the crowds.
Lechon: The Best Pig in the World
Anthony Bourdain famously called Cebu lechon the best pig he ever ate, and locals will tell you he was simply stating a fact. The whole roasted pig comes out with glass-crisp skin and meat perfumed with lemongrass and garlic - so flavorful that nobody serves sauce with it. Purists ride south to the public market in Carcar; in the city, Rico's Lechon and CNT are the classic names. A plate with rice costs around 200 to 350 PHP.

Fly into Mactan-Cebu International Airport, the country's second-largest hub with direct flights from all over Asia. For the south coast, Ceres buses leave the South Bus Terminal every 30 minutes or so - count on 3 to 4 hours to Moalboal or Oslob for a few hundred pesos.
